Things What I Have Learnt Today

1. The statues along the embankment gardens have vents built into their bases. This was so smoke from the early (gas-lit, steam-powered) underground railways could escape. It all came up between their feet... See: Sanada's Big Fart. Unni, this one's for you.

2. Every vaguely political building in London probably has an underground tunnel linking it to every other vaguely political building in London.

3. There are still tunnels under London which are seekrit.

4. Once a guy called Duncan got curious about the tunnels under London and decided to explore them. With the aid of a folding pushbike. As you do.

5. YuYu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter are unmistakably created by the same person. Togashi, your brain is a very special place. ♥

6. Sometimes truth actually really is stranger than fiction. Unless the fiction in question is created by Togashi.

7. Niou has many hobbies...

8. It is very important not to leave a cat unattended with leftover fish.

That just makes me want to keep adding more in. 8) Not that I really have much more to say for myself, but...

(posting as lp because my IJ account won't open!)

My mother was a London-based civil servant in the late 50s/60s and remembers some of the underground stuff being dug/built; apparently one site was a bit of a tourist attraction although nobody knew, officially, what it was. Later she volunteered to be part of the in-the-event-of-nuclear-war emergency staff and got to go into one of the non London sites for wargames.

Oh, that's really interesting! In a slightly freaky sort of way. It's intriguing, though, just how much stuff is down there.

I was told years ago that there's a bunker underneath Cardiff city centre as well, although nobody has offered me a pass!
