Onward!

*adds The Warrior's Apprentice (Lois McMaster Bujold) to the read pile*

Good read, that one. *g* I started off a bit dissatisfied purely because I bounced straight over to it from the Gentleman Bastard books and I am possibly... somewhat over-fond of the main characters there. Other books were liable to be found guilty of the crime of Not Being About Locke. That slight barrier overcome, though, it was a really enjoyable story. I look forward to Miles's continued adventures, when I can actually find any of the other books. (Not least, one has to wonder how he'll avoid getting strangled. WAIT, DOES THIS SOUND LIKE SOMETHING I MAY HAVE SAID ABOUT LOCKE RECENTLY? HMM.)

Apparently I'm quite fond of characters who are Too Inventive For Their Own Good.

Who knew.

(Don't answer that.)

Next is Fairyland by Paul J McAuley, because it's been sitting on my to read pile since I was in my mid-teens, and that's a slightly embarrassing period of time to have been meaning to read a book for. It's probably been about four or five years since I even spoke to the person who recommended it to me. (They also recommended Altered Carbon and The Stars My Destination, both of which I only got around to last year and both of which I loved... oops.)

Bujold is one of my all-time favorite authors. Her characterizations are terrific, she inserts hilarious humor that springs from the characters and situations (a la real life) and she possesses an excellent grasp of politics and political intrigue.

Oh, and she's talented. Did I mention that? She's won four Hugos in the Novel Category (more than any other writer except Heinlein).

Definitely continue with her Vorkosigan series (The first two books, Shards of Honor and Barrayar, introduce his mother and father.) She also wrote Curse of Chalion, which has become one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels.

Are you a member of Science Fiction Book Club? You can get a lot of those books as 3-in-1s from them. Your library should be able to request any of them you can't find.

jklfsdlkjsdf Can you tell yet that I like her?

Yeah. I feel like I've just begun to peek into the world Miles et al are part of and it's really fascinating! She does write wonderful characters. :) [livejournal.com profile] solaas has already indicated that I might particularly like those books about Miles's parents, I seem to recall.

I'm not. Actually I don't think I can be, since I'm not in north america, though I'm sure there's a UK equivalent. ^^'' Our independent bookshop in town sometimes has her books in stock, anyway, and is usually happy to order stuff in if at all possible. I'll poke around. (Although the rational part of my brain IS trying to point out that I only really have money for food again now and that my to-read pile is already big. God, I hate rational thought sometimes. *g* Perhaps the library after all.)

Just a bit. But that's okay. :D ♥

Bujold is amazing. Her characters are so well-rounded and interesting. If you get a chance and can find it, read The Mountains of Mourning by her. It's a novella (and a Hugo winner). If you read the series chronologically, MoM is the first time we meet Miles as an adult.

It's just jkfsdljklsfd amazing. I swipe quotes from her all the time, too, and use them in RP.

You'll love Cordelia and Aral.

I think all of her stuff is in print, but a library's probably your best (and cheapest) alternative.

*sparkles at you lots* Isn't Miles great? I love him to bits and pieces, and my Yuuta muse wants to be him when he grows up. (Which, uh, tends to explain a lot about my Yuuta.)

The words "god help us all" do rather spring to mind... XDDD Miles really is fantastic, though.

Miles is love. Cordelia is also love, and you totally need to read the first two.

Ekaterin, when you meet her way down the line, is /also/ love.

I barely know anything about Cordelia yet and I am already rather convinced that I love her. *g*

It's great to see so many others who love her stuff!

And I concur about Ekaterin. I'd like to see a novel featuring Ivan, I think. He's so much smarter than he lets on.

Gosh I just realised I started reading these 10 years ago!
She is my favourite author, one of the few that can make me laugh out loud. Even my mum who doesn't do sci-fi loved them ^_^
Pretty much all her Miles series has been released as 3 in 1s which would save you a fair bit of money.
The timeline is here http://www.dendarii.co.uk/FanFic/timeline.html with the book names in brackets. Borders of Infinity is three short stories which is why its split.

Actually I should probably warn for spoilers from that link if you're not careful!

Yeah, that would be way more practical. :D For now I'm not allowed since I'm briefly pretending that I can make my to-read pile smaller, but yeah. I'll have given up by next month I'm sure. :D
