Oh, make it be tomorrow already. And make it stop raining. This isn't even proper winter rain, it's just pathetic.
Anyway. Huge Rikkaimyu Post Of Doom time.
I can't honestly remember exactly what I said last time so there'll probably be some repetition. Let's just go through this in some kind of order and see what we end up with. Spoilers pretty much throughout, of course. Trying to order what I've already said a little better and include things from the other two performances we saw.
You know I loved Rikkai. Oh how I loved them. They had great dynamics, good grasp of their characters in general, and while the singing was a tiiiny bit variable no-one was really bad. I had their song stuck in my head for days, also. Pez and I were walking around humming it. It's so... them. Imposing and all about winning! So one track. *laughs and pets them*
- D2. Marui and Jackal. Fun. Very entertaining. I quite like them anyway but am not a massive fan - but yeah, they were portrayed well, and they had a lot of nice bits in the background while other things were going on as well. They were in the background during Kirihara's unofficial match against Ryoma, clutching their knees in sympathy, which was pretty funny. They also got involved at one point during the D1 match - more on that in a minute. I thought the guy playing Jackal was pretty cool, especially, but ok - what mostly impressed me was what a good reproduction of the characters the pair of them pulled off.
- D1. Niou and Yagyuu. Source of endless squee for me but shall try to remain calm while typing. Admittedly I was very glad that the myus follow manga canon anyway, but this was the point at which it made all the difference for me, because these two are somewhat different in terms of personality as well as actual actions from the manga to the anime, I think.
Right. Niou did seem a touch bouncy when he first appeared but that was the only time really. I have no fucking clue what he was actually singing about to make him act like that, either, so... uh. There may have been a good reason. *amused* After that, he was so much the Niou I know. Lovely piece of interaction with Yukimura when they visit him in hospital - just jumping on the bed and chatting with him. The second time we saw it he jumped on the bed and fell asleep, until Sanada shouted at him and gave him a special, special death-glare as he left. Beautiful. During the actual match he was ohh so perfect, and boy, can Masa dance. I know I've said that before, but I must say it again. Repeatedly. Masa dancing. Oh yeah. (So much for remaining calm.)
Puri~!
Yagyuu was lovely. Well, I say lovely. He was really well portrayed which is not quite the same thing. :D Dignified, and sang really well, and... okay, I don't really have as much to say about Yagyuu as Niou somehow, but he quite definitely felt right. (...he and Yanagi were both sitting in such a girly way during the D2 match, though. Right next to each other, legs crossed in front of them, hands folded on their knees. *amused as anything*)
Then of course there was the match. Well. Switch, yes. Awesome. I have to say that they did do the switch well, despite having somewhat different builds. It wasn't perfect, you could see that they were switched, but you could also see that it was good enough that opponents who were unfamiliar with the two of them wouldn't notice the difference. :) (It's not like the switch was perfect in the manga anyway.) Bits of the dance they did after the switch was reveal cracked me the hell up. *g*
But, ok. Basically, after the switch was revealed (and they'd fixed their socks! XD!!!) they took it in turns to go behind the scenes to switch back, and while Niou was gone Marui pretended to be Yagyuu (Yagyuu was still being Niou), got shoved out of the way by Niou returning as himself... two Nious dancing together, breifly, oh yes, and then Yagyuu went to switch back and Jackal got hold of a wig and glasses and pretended to be Yagyuu as well. The looks on both his and Yagyuu's faces when Yagyuu walked up behind him and snatched his wig? Best thing ever.
Some lovely bits of D1 fanservice, too. Which of course made me squee like an idiot. In the second performance we saw, while they were standing together off to one side (presumably discussing tactics or something, it was actually during the match), Niou pretty much put his arm across Yagyuu's shoulders and they were standing oh so close together and facing each other... it wouldn't have taken much, damn it... *grin* And in the last performance they sort of half hugged when they won. Aww. (On a slightly random note, I still wonder what exactly Masa did during the curtain call of the first performance we saw, because I was paying attention to Kanesaki and Yagami Ren hugging and looked back in the direction of Masa just in time to see Baba Toru practically herding him off stage. I guess I will be curious forever.)
Moving on... *eyes the amount she's just written for D1 without covering everything she feels could be said*
- Kirihara. I didn't really have high hopes for Kirihara before we saw the myu, to be honest. He just looked kind of weird and... *shrug* but he did well. Mostly we saw him in the match against Echizen, and he has definitely perfected the evil little smirk. In the background during the doubles matches he was entertaining, making little movements as though he was trying to figure out how to do the laser beam and stuff like that. And he tried to get Sanada's attention to ask him about something at one point and got such a glare. Poor kid. XD;
His failure to comprehend Echizen's english during the match was funny, too - it was different each time, though I can't remember exactly what he did on each occasion. The one which sticks in the mind is "Ahahaha... haha... huh?" Silly demon-imp. :D (Marui and Jackal in the background: "So how much did Akaya score on his last English test?" "Two points."/"Akaya didn't understand that at all, did he?" "Nope." Oh, D2.)
- Sanada. Oh hell. Sanada was hot and sang extremely well. And again, very well-captured character, I thought. Loved the fight with the Enemy of Straw (XD). And, god, such a dork at times. Drawing his tennis racquet from under his arm as though it was a sword and then 'sheathing' it again after. *snerks* Again with the following manga continuity - he smacks Jackal (and Marui in this case, because they had Marui be there with Jackal during the match to provide a commentary, which I don't think there was in the manga - but in that format the same things could be put across in other ways. Especially the bit about Kirihara's english), and Kirihara, when he finds them at the street courts. I live in hope that they will include him trying to backhand Renji in the next part. The interaction between him and Yukimura was also really nice. In the last performance we saw there was an extra bit - the only time the two of them actually touched on stage (while in character). When Sanada went to leave the hospital because Kirihara was causing trouble at the street courts he usually just paused for a slightlytoolong moment before leaving, but this time he walked over to Yukimura, put his hand on his shoulder, and just sort of... lingered. Then left. (Cue squee from entire audience.)
- Yukimura. Yagami Ren kinda sings worse than the rest of Rikkai, but I didn't actually think he sang badly on any occasion. (I can forgive his voice being a little weak in comparison to some of the others. Yukimura is ill anyway. XDD ) He looked a lot better as Yukimura than I anticipated. Sang a duet with Sanada (*wibblesquee*). Am betting this Yukimura is pretty good friends with Niou. They seemed like that. It made me happy. Ah... but of course, he didn't get to do a huge amount, because he's the Sick Absent Captain.
- Yanagi. Not many comments still. Didn't do anything to make me dislike him but honestly didn't do much of anything. We'll see next time. He didn't look as weird as he has tended to in photos (or as I think he's tended to in photos, anyway).
As for Seigaku. Okay. First off, I did think they were all good, although Kaidou possibly was the worst... but even then, he wasn't hugely bad.
- Minami as Tezuka. I had the bias of Pez's squeeing (for the record, yes, she did scream when she saw one of the pictures in his photoset, and it wasn't even the topless one - I'm just glad we were in the ryokan at the time, not at the venue), and am not very naturally predisposed to care hugely about the guy, but though he was, um, weirdly tiny-looking despite being tall... he wasn't a bad Tez, I thought. (Has been commented that he looks like Tezuka if Tezuka actually was 15 rather than secretly being an old man posing as a JH student and failing to maintain cover well.)
- Echizen. Okay, I have a confession to make. I liked Echizen. I also think the guy who plays him is ludicrously, squishably cute. And can sing. This is damn shocking. But yeah, he was good! And spoke suitably amusing bad English. :D :D :D This probably should not make me as happy as it does. He's probably a bit tall to be absolutely perfect but in all other respects I'd say he's easily the best Echizen there has been.
- Golden pair. Um. Okay. I don't care much for them, you know? In general terms. But I thought they were really well done here. I liked them a lot better than any of the other incarnations (but to be honest I hated the ones the rest of the world seems to have loved, so you shouldn't be trusting my judgement here, perhaps.I still want to punch Tuti in the face every time I see him in something. The Bleach myu did not improve things.) ...they did the flashback thing in the middle of the D1 match well, actually, though it wasn't the actors themselves doing it. It was two of the first-years, I think, backlit so you couldn't see their faces.
- Momoshiro and Kaidou. Momo's eyebrows were less scary than in Rokkakumyu, at least. Uhh. I guess they were ok in their match? I have to say I was honestly spending a lot of time during the D2 match watching Niou and Yagyuu, though, to see when they switched. I'll probably catch more on the DVD because I'll be forced to look at them. Kaidou couldn't compare to the previous one (the one in Rokkakumyu), who was seriously awesome. He did have one or two good moments, but overall, it just wasn't quite the same. Momoshiro was better this time than last time, I think. Maybe just because the eyebrows were distressing me less.
Everyone else, well... Aiba was Aiba, you know what he's like by now... Inui was improved but didn't do much... Taka was... *shrug* look, I don't care much about him even relative to the rest of Seigaku. Sorry. Again, one memorable moment. The first-years were fine, but they didn't get their own song this time. Too much else going on really, I suppose.
General stuff: last time I mentioned the sequence of snippets where they were all very entertaining, I think. If you remember, there was a bit where Echizen came in to school the day after his match against Kirihara and all the regulars had red eyes? Yeah. It's about how this came about, basically. Most of it turned out to be different each time, which was cool - Eiji was playing a tennis game on his PSP or whatever it was and the first time we saw the myu he was playing... ah... Bane vs. Sanada? I think? The second time it was Oshitari vs. Sanada, and he did a Kansai accent. XD;; The last night was Tezuka vs. Sanada. ("Tezuka got careless...") Momoshiro was watching a video. LUCKY! :O Kaidou was out training, and at one point got lost. XDDD Probably his finest moment. It kept showing what other people were doing and then going back to him, still running. Oishi was getting tangled up with his bed while repeating "It'll be alright" over and over... he eventually ended up under the bed. On the last night he was counting Tezukas to try and get to sleep. XD;;; On the morning performance, he was making swimming motions in bed. Inui had his little "I'm still not over Renji, the bastard" moment, and uh. Fuji. Cactus. Catcus. Fuji. No damn words.
Oh, and Minami and Aiba went rather all-out with the fanservice at curtain call on the last night - what with Minami picking Aiba up... XD;
And then there was Rokkaku. They got upstaged so badly in their own musical so it was really nice to see them here, especially as I rather liked them. :D They're a very, very entertaining team. To be honest I struggled a little more to follow what they were doing sometimes than I did with the others, especially because of the puns and because with the Rikkai arc stuff I could guess if I didn't know thanks to far too much familiarity with that part of the manga, but still. XD
- Bane & Davide. Um. Married, yes? Yes. (Why is there not more fic, bitches?) I can remember more about Davide right now... mostly the way people kept stealing his puns. :D He barely got any out himself, other people kept making them for him. Aww, the frustration. *laughs* I have a vague recollection of him rubbing Bane's arm at some point in a slightly suggestive manner but cannot for the life of me remember why. Anyone else who saw it care to enlighten?
...and the rest will just be points about them as a team, because really, they were mostly acting as a unit here. They teased each other. A lot. In a friendly sort of way. I mentioned the puns, and they were teasing Aoi about something... I don't know what, actually. And Kisarazu Ryou got teased about never getting to play. There was also one point where the team had just been speaking to Seigaku and were leaving the stage, and Davide stopped KisaRyou with a hand on his shoulder and said something to him, and then left, and KisaRyou (seriously, what do I call the guy?) made as though he was flicking dirt off his shoulder.
The whole lot of them are such a family and it makes me happy. :D :D
They got the two bits here, really - one right before the interval when they were running around amongst the audience 'collecting shellfish' (I reiterate: Bane and Saeki in the aisle next to us. >D ) and a bit where they came to speak to Seigaku. Then they were pretty much there in the background throughout the rest, watching the doubles matches. They completely freaked out at the switch, with much gesturing and staring. :D
....okay, that's the schools. I meant to say more about general stuff but I didn't expect that bit to turn out so damn epic! :| (I've been writing this update since *checks* 3pm. It is now 6:30. Though admittedly I do keep getting distracted by talking to people.) I can't honestly remember what else I was going to say now, either, though I know there was other stuff... okay, just quickly:
The songs were a touch variable. I've seen other people mention not liking Rikkai's song that much but I did think it was pretty awesome myself. The one which stands out as having been really not-great was this odd thing they had during the match between Kirihara and Echizen, where the Seigaku members came out one at a time to stand around Echizen. It was unaccompanied for the first bit and most of them couldn't really hold the tune properly, so yeah, that was... hmm. It really didn't work. But that was the only bit which was just outright bad.
And while I could get into a lot more detail than that I think it might kill me, so there I stop.
Rikkaimyu. There you have it.

Waiting for the DVD

Date: 2007-01-05 07:28 pm (UTC)I so want to see it. Especially when the first RikkaiMyu has so much of D1! Poor things, so underrated and all. ;_; But I can believe them to be great... Heck, I don't have the words I'd like to use! xD You got me speechless.
I really can't wait to see Kanesaki and Yagami~! ♥ I like them from what I've seen, and your description sounds a lot better than what I had anticipated! ^^ And Sanada & Yukimura are having sex, so much. That's obvious. >D
What comes to Seigaku; I really think their best moment is that "what they do in their free time" part, which I really look forward to. If nothing else, I like Aiba. xD
Rokkaku = love! I will always be a fan of Hyotei's, but to have Rokkaku around is so much more fun! All of them are so adorable.
But, thank you so much for writing this! It helped me a lot and it was nice to read. ^^ As other things: you don't have any idea what's happened to Allison either, then? I have no idea... Maybe she deleted her journal due to some comments she had received lately? Hm, who knows. Let's just hope she'll be back soon. :/
And one thing more: could we be friends? I checked your userinfo and we have some common interests, such as Bleach and of course, Prince of Tennis (Rikkai!). And you generally seem like a very nice person, so I'd love to get to know you better. Is that okay with you? I thought I'd ask before friending you - it's just a habit of mine. :3 *hugs*

Date: 2007-01-05 07:53 pm (UTC)I really liked Sanada & Yukimura in the myu, though I see around the place that not everyone did... oh well. I am pretty naturally inclined to like Rikkai but I really did think they were better than I expected.
(Oh how Sanada and Yukimura are having sex. And D1 are probably having kinky sex. Heh. >_>)
Oh, yeah. Aiba and his cactus. XD;
You're welcome! :)
But... no, I don't... we were talking in comments and stuff and then the next time I checked her journal was gone. Hm. Hopefully nothing is too horribly wrong.
Yes, sure! :) Go right ahead. :)

Date: 2007-01-05 09:09 pm (UTC)Though now I shall angst about not being able to see it till... April?I really wanna see D1 in action - ever since their teammates said in the official site interview that Nakagauchi is the best dancer and Baba has the best voice.
Hmm, it seems that some viewers don't like Yukimura all that much because of him being too "manly" for the part? I actually like Yagami (especially after the photoset), but then, I'm not that big of a Yukimura fan to judge what his personality and acting should be like, so I'll just enjoy Ren's impersonation of him.
And by the way, would you happen to know, when the second part is due to come out? I'd really like to go see in summer, if it doesn't interfere with work and study...
Thanks again for typing all this! ♥

Date: 2007-01-05 09:20 pm (UTC)Ah, that might be it - I have no problem with Yukimura being manly. I suppose that might account for the difference of opinion. ;)
I don't know exactly, but I'd suspect around August? I'd dearly love to go see the second part myself, though it seems a little much of a stretch for my finances. Well, at least I got to see the match which is most important to me... :D
You're welcome. :)

Date: 2007-01-05 09:37 pm (UTC)Guess we have to wait for Konomi to finally draw him on the court to find out for sure! XD
Heh, I simply got myself a good bargain - my brother said he would pay the travel expenses and possibly more, if I stop shoving him black&white photos of half-naked men. Ah, the Rikkai photoset really does perform miracles! XDD

Date: 2007-01-05 10:56 pm (UTC)Hmm, would you mind me friending you? I've just started reading your "Gentleman and Trickster" saga and am quite enjoying it! Not to mention that fic you posted at the community lately... ^___^
But mainly,, for the mere reason that you seem to be friendly and nice person! ^^

Date: 2007-01-05 11:35 pm (UTC)Ah, but it's far better than a lot of fics I come across... Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Certainly praises you, but I feel bad for the amount of mediocre writing there happens to be...//

Date: 2007-01-05 11:53 pm (UTC)It's kind of unfortunate, really, the general quality of fic... :\ but there are some real gems out there, hiding around the place. :) Usually just when I'm losing faith in fandom I find something really special. :D

Date: 2007-01-06 12:01 am (UTC)Ah yes, true! One should never give up on his search for good fics! :D

Date: 2007-01-05 09:53 pm (UTC)Yeah, pretty much I'm pissed as fucking HELL at certain people who basically implied I'm a cunt and my RL is of no value and I am basically trying to decide exactly what I want to do with my lj now: whether to f-o it, defriend a slew of people, lock all my fics, lock no fics, I just don't know yet, but I'm not dead and I can read your ljs still (yay! thank god!). I just do not want certain individuals having any more fodder off my lj and skewing my words.
Ugh.
What a fucking mess.
On the plus side, my pre-application to the phd program I want in to went through! ;P

Date: 2007-01-05 10:06 pm (UTC)Best thing to do is friends-lock most of your personal entries in that case, probably. (Although I am coming to hate doing that myself and it's irritatingly hard to stop once you start.) *sigh* Wonder why people feel the need to say their piece in that way when it's just personal opinions on someone's own journal.

Date: 2007-01-05 10:21 pm (UTC)The thing I'm most stumped on is the locking of any fandom-related stuff. I'm so pissed that frankly, I don't want said woman and/or any of her friends reading anything I have to say- imo, they don't deserve to read my fic if they're going to be ragging about me like that. However, I hate the idea of locking stuff from non-friends and lurkers and I also dislike the idea of separate fic journals.
Grr.

Date: 2007-01-05 10:29 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's a tough one, really. It would be pretty sad to lock everything away, to be honest, especially as it's higher quality than vast amounts of fanfiction. I think in the end - fuck it, it's not worth worrying that much about? (Which is easy enough to say but I'm very picky about who gets to read what so I'm not one to talk.)

Aha~ the only part of the Rikkai song I actually remember is the "zetTAI katsunoda~" It made me jump when they sang it xD;; no wonder it got lodged into my brain lol.
anyway, thanks for the review ;D it actually made me remember some bits and I love the variations in the different shows xD
