Amazon one-click ordering is so dangerous. Oh well. A bunch more Bleach volumes should be on their way to me... Everyone is getting so excited about recent events in the manga. Even more curiosity and need to get caught up. Might pick it up from the end of soul society and then backtrack and read the earlier volumes in paperback form. when they arrive. The (official) English translation isn't right the way up to the end of Soul Society yet but it's getting there. Could anyone tell me when exactly the Soul Society arc ends in the manga, and if it's similar enough to allow me to just jump right in at that point or if I really do need to read the earlier parts of the manga first?

The anime stayed very close to the manga up to the end of the Rescue arc, so you can probably just jump right in at 182, when they get home. Actually, I'd recommend picking up at 179, so you get the manga version of the Byakuya-Rukia backstory and the talk between Renji and Byakuya, which are just a bit different. *hearts the manga*

In general, the manga offers more detail and more depth, though there are places where the anime went and made shit up. Most of Soi Fong's actual experiences with Yoruichi, for example, are anime-only. Also, interestingly enough, the anime added to /both/ the Rukia-in-Rukongai sidestory /and/ the Rukia-and-Renji-in-school sidestory. In the first, they add more stuff about how she has more spiritual power than Renji; in the second, they add stuff about her being worse at school than he is. The manga has her in the same classes as Renji, it's just /socially/ that she doesn't make the same connections.

Thanks for the information. :) I actually pretty much figured it out from wikipedia in the end, but downloaded what looked to be the last few chapters of soul society as well just to get the transition. Think I hit the right place. :)

Oh, really? Mm. Well, eventually I'll read those volumes. But while I'm having to read stuff on computer it's good to know that they're reasonably similar so I can skip ahead a bit.
